Recovering a specific service

Quick answers

How do I get back into a specific service without my 2FA codes?
That service's own account-recovery flow is how you get back in, not this app. Look for backup codes you saved at setup, or ask them to verify who you are.

If you're locked out of one specific service after losing your codes, that service's own account-recovery flow is how you get back in, not this app. Look for backup codes you saved at setup, or ask them to verify who you are.

Symptom

"How do I get back into [a service] without my 2FA codes?"

Why this happens

Two-factor codes are generated on your device and can't be recovered from this app once the device or backup is gone. There's no server copy to send you (see /security). Every major service expects this and builds its own recovery path for exactly this situation.

Fix

The exact steps vary by service, but they usually look like this:

  1. Check for backup or recovery codes you saved when you first turned on 2FA: a password manager, a printed sheet, or a secure note.
  2. On the service's sign-in page, look for "Lost your device?" or "Can't access your authenticator?" Most major services have this link.
  3. If neither exists, contact that service's support directly and follow the steps they use to check who you are.
  4. Once you're back in, set up 2FA again and create a backup this time. See getting started.
