Frequently asked questions

Codes generate offline on your device. You can switch from another authenticator app without redoing your 2FA setup. Keeping and moving your codes is free; only Cloud Sync and browser-extension push are paid. The full answers are below.

What can TOTP Authenticator do?

It generates two-factor authentication codes for any service that supports TOTP, the same standard Google Authenticator and most other authenticator apps use. Codes generate offline, on your device. You don't need an account or a phone number to start.

Can I switch from another authenticator app without redoing 2FA setup?

Yes. Import brings your accounts across without touching each service: Google Authenticator's export QR (otpauth-migration://), an Aegis vault backup (.json), a 2FAS backup (.2fas), or a plain otpauth:// list (.txt or QR). See /switch/google-authenticator for the walkthrough.

I just added my first account. What should I do next?

Back it up. An offline backup file is free and takes a few taps: Settings → Backup. Cloud Sync (iCloud on iOS, Google Drive on Android) is a paid, one-time purchase that syncs automatically instead. It's a convenience, not a requirement: the offline backup alone is enough to never lose access.

The QR code won't scan, or the key won't enter. What do I do?

Grant camera permission, make sure there's good lighting, and hold the phone steady. You can also skip scanning and type in the setup key shown next to the QR code instead. Full steps: /docs/troubleshooting/qr-wont-scan.

My codes are suddenly being rejected. Why?

This is almost always your phone's clock drifting, because codes are based on the time. Turn on automatic date & time in your phone's settings. Full steps: /docs/troubleshooting/wrong-time-codes-rejected.

How do I switch phones without losing or resetting my accounts?

Three ways, two of them free: restore an offline backup file, move accounts one at a time by scanning each one's QR on the new phone, or (paid) let Cloud Sync carry them over automatically. Full guide: /docs/new-phone.

I purchased Premium before. Do I need to buy it again?

Not on the same platform. Sign in to the same App Store or Google Play account and tap Restore Purchase, which is free. Moving from iPhone to Android (or the reverse) does need a new purchase, because the two stores don't share entitlements. Details: /docs/troubleshooting/restore-purchase.

What premium features are available, and what do they cost?

Cloud Sync and browser-extension push are the only paid features. They come as a one-time purchase (per platform), not a subscription. Everything else is free, including offline backup, restore, and moving accounts by QR. See /pricing for the exact price in your region.

What happens if I lose my phone, or don't back up?

If Cloud Sync is on, your accounts restore automatically on a new device signed in to the same iCloud or Google account. If you made an offline backup, restore from that file. Without either, your accounts exist only on that phone, and losing it means losing access to them.

How can I recover my accounts if I didn't back up?

Without a backup file, Cloud Sync, or your old phone, we cannot recover your codes. Nobody at this company can. You can still get back in by contacting each service directly and going through their account-recovery process. Full guidance, ordered by what to tackle first: /docs/troubleshooting/lost-phone-no-backup.
